Located in the Belize District
Caye Caulker (prounounced “Key Cawker”) is called Ambergris Caye‘s little sister but it has a vibe all its own. Smaller in size (you can walk the whole island in about half an hour) with sand roads and brightly colored wooden buildings, Caulker gives life to the phrase “Go Slow”.
Just 15 minutes flight flight from Belize City, you can see exactly what you are in from the air. The island was split in town by a hurricane and the north part of the island still remains relatively sparsely populated.
Caye Caulker tends to draw a diverse crowd just like the “big island” of Ambergris but more heavily weighted towards a younger, more international back packing crew due to its lower prices and it’s lay back feel.
If both islands appeal to you (as they do to me), there are frequent day trips from Ambergris Caye by catamaran or motor boat and the water taxi (your cheapest option) brings you from San Pedro town to Caye Caulker in just 15 minutes.
PLUS, Caye Caulker will always have a very fond spot in my heart…it’s where I ran into ABC’s “The Bachelor” (goofball Ben Flajnik) which inspired me to write my most popular post of all time as Scooperazzi.
