Young Skippers of San Pedro at Caribbean Villas

Each Sunday, kids of San Pedro take to the waters for the Youth Sunday Sailboat Races.  The boats and the kids are sponsored by local businesses and honestly…can you think of a more relaxing, fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon?  Have a beer at Caribbean Villas Hotel bar (it’s a very nice beach palapa) and watch these intrepid little sailors take to the sea!

Caribbean Villas is a hotel just south of town with a pretty beach and the biggest water sports hub in San Pedro.  They do lessons and rentals in wind surfing, kite surfing, sailing and more.  If you come to Ambergris Caye for water sports, this is your spot.

And these Sunday races aren’t just for fun and good times, the 2011 Belize Optimist National Championship Regatta is being held in San Pedro on November 12.  These nationals will decide which young Belizean skipper ought to travel to one or more international regattas (depending, of course, on funding and donations).  Take a look at these places!  I wonder if I can pass for a junior sailor.  Hmmmm…I could look short in a boat.  Or maybe I could just chaperone.

The regatta and the weeks leading up to it are sure to be exciting.   Last week’s results and sponsors:

Youth Sunday Sailboat Race Results for October 16th (Place, Name, Sponsor)

1st – Mitchell Sersland, Palapa Bar & Grill

2nd – Beverly Medrano,

3rd – Morgaine Jones, Caribbean Villas
4th – Zulema Ayala, Ambergris Lake Villas

For more information or to donate to this very worthy cause (it’s such a cool way to teach kids here about their San Pedro sailing heritage), send me an email and I can hook you up with the right person.  Either way, GET TO CARIBBEAN VILLAS next Sunday at 11am…and cheer on the next group of kids.
