I know, I know, I know…the past week has been all about beach pictures and talk of great weather in Belize. But it has been absolutely stunning and today might have been the very best day of the year. Gorgeous, amazing, sunny, breezy, perfect. Perfect for the beginning of Carnaval 2014.
I spent about an hour hanging out on the beach with friends before heading into town…
for the…dreaded by some, loved by many…CARNAVAL!
Three days of being painted and painted by others. There is a schedule…
there are rules…
But today, the kids were out with squeeze bottles of paint and more than a few eggs and…let’s say that you had to be careful. But it’s all so super fun…here are my pictures.
The front street was strangely quiet except for the kids.
And then the comparsas. The cross-dressing, singing and dancing, fundraising ritual in San Pedro. Unique for sure.
Here is our Mayor Daniel Guerrero donating wigs for the mini-parades.
I ran into the AIDs Commission – the first of three days of costumes and performance and for Day One? They were TOTALLY rocking it.
Felix as Pocahontas. Keeping it classy. Tee hee.
Love it!
I am leaving tomorrow for the gorgeous, amazing colonial city of Merida, Mexico so…I’ll miss the next two days of Carnaval. BUT, I’ll be on the very first flight from Belize City straight to Merida on Tropic Air Belize. I CAN’T WAIT! And will be reporting back constantly.
Here’s a map to show you the direction.
For those who will be in San Pedro, ENJOY CARNAVAL! And if you can, send me pictures. [email protected]
a few years back…i had a great idea…for carnival….
i went to belize city..
and baught me , the biggest water-blaster, belize had to sell….!
i had been saving up gator-ade bottles for just this event. and filled them up with paint…, fashioned a bandito style ring of paint filled bottles…grabbed mi wata blaster…and headed south to town..[on mi old bike.]
i hit the streets in the afternoon and, if it moved , i painted it. ….. at bicycle-speed.!… that was great i thaught… and after a few hrs…and about 10 bottles…i headed home for refilling the bottle and mi belly..!!
in the evening..i headed to the park and locked up the bike…..
there was about 80 people, of all ages.. tossin paint like no bodies bizznass…..
i stepped into the middle of it all and started spinning-roun and blasting…it was fine untill i needed to re-load the blaster…oops….my bad..!!!
then alla sudden it was like ants on honey…
they ripped off the goggles….
they ripped off the kerchief…
they got me good….
they…poured paint into my eyes, mouth , ears… i couldnt see at all….and barely hear a thing….
finally …. 2 young boys ,offered to lead me to the sea…
to clean mi eyes… in exchange for each..a fresh bottle of paint….for more fun…
i was quite the site….without any ,sight…!! lololol
yah …carnaval…there aint nothin like it……!!
i sure do hope they dont ”rules” the fun outta it..!!
the next outrageous plan….double scuba tanks…upside down…3/4 full of paint and 1200 lbs PSI….
ONE GUN IN EACH HAND. ”MAKE MY DAY/canaval”
