Dreaded By Some, Loved By Many, Unique to San Pedro, Belize – Carnaval 2014
I know, I know, I know…the past week has been all about beach pictures and talk of great weather in Belize. But it has been absolutely stunning and today might have been the very best day of the year. Gorgeous, amazing, sunny, breezy, perfect. Perfect for the beginning of Carnaval 2014.
I spent about an hour hanging out on the beach with friends before heading into town…
for the…dreaded by some, loved by many…CARNAVAL!
Three days of being painted and painted by others. There is a schedule…
there are rules…
But today, the kids were out with squeeze bottles of paint and more than a few eggs and…let’s say that you had to be careful. But it’s all so super fun…here are my pictures.
The front street was strangely quiet except for the kids.
And then the comparsas. The cross-dressing, singing and dancing, fundraising ritual in San Pedro. Unique for sure.
Here is our Mayor Daniel Guerrero donating wigs for the mini-parades.
I ran into the AIDs Commission – the first of three days of costumes and performance and for Day One? They were TOTALLY rocking it.
Felix as Pocahontas. Keeping it classy. Tee hee.
Love it!
I am leaving tomorrow for the gorgeous, amazing colonial city of Merida, Mexico so…I’ll miss the next two days of Carnaval. BUT, I’ll be on the very first flight from Belize City straight to Merida on Tropic Air Belize. I CAN’T WAIT! And will be reporting back constantly.
Here’s a map to show you the direction.
For those who will be in San Pedro, ENJOY CARNAVAL! And if you can, send me pictures. [email protected]
