Blue Water Grill in San Pedro, Belize is Way More Than Just A Great Restaurant

There are so many great restaurant on Ambergris Caye, often it’s hard to choose.  But almost everyone who visits San Pedro, eats at least one meal at beachfront Blue Water Grill.   And it’s not just visitors…during the busier months (December thru April), tables for the super popular Sushi Tuesdays and Thursdays are filled with local residents- reservations are often a must.  If such a thing exists in Belize?  It is the place to see and be seen.

And the sign – the spot to photograph and to be photographed in front of…

It is BY FAR the best sushi in town.  They do tasty specials, classic rolls, sashimi, GORGEOUS SALADS (you must try the Ahi Poke Salad…it’s one of the best eats on the island) as well as their regular menu.   Which is pretty damn good.  Great pizza, seafood, something for everyone.

They can throw a ridiculously fun and extravagant party.  Here’s just one picture of the 10 Year Anniversary Party in November of 2011.   (It was the very first invitation I received as SanPedroScoop – I started the blog in June of that year.)

Okay…great parties.  They also are open for all meals, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  Impressive…and great for us.

They have great swag…perfect souvenirs.  Hats, sweatshirts, tanks, shirts galore…take a look.

We know the food is fantastic…I had this delicious burger with blue cheese, bacon and green apple yesterday to prove it to myself for about the 4000th time…

IMG_8945But here is what makes Blue Water Grill above and beyond special.  I was reminded of it yesterday when I was leaving after lunch and ran into Mukul, who owns the restaurant with his wife, the founder, Kelly.

Here’s a 2011 picture of Kelly.

Both are smart, funny, warm, crazy generous and both very low-key about it.

Mukul was preparing a $2000 check to donate to the San Pedro Jr. College Womens’ Football team.  They had just made it into the finals in Corozal, Belize and needed money for travel and accommodations.  And so…Mukul and Kelly thought they could help.

Amazing.  This year, they are focusing on local charities (like it says above).  Last month was the San Pedro Cancer Society – this month the local primary school.  The largest in town.

They also encourage their staff to keep fit and healthy by paying for gym or Crossfit membership…pretty cool.

When you are leaving, drop off some money in the box by the cashier.  Money will be matched and given to the month’s group.

They also support local artists and have art displayed all over the place…

Some art that you can purchase for charity…

One for the Liberty Children’s Home and one for the SAGA Humane Society.

And…maybe my favorite part of Blue Water Grill (Ahi Poke Salad aside OF COURSE…oh and the wait staff…I love all those guys) is the stand they make for what is right in local advertisements.  Giving us all a bit of courage to speak up to make San Pedro and Belize a better place.  Here are some examples…they have a new one in almost every single addition of the San Pedro Sun newspaper.

Standing up against the leadership of Belize ain’t easy.  It’s really amazing stuff.

And the generosity abounds, inspiring me and lots of others.  You’ve got to love these guys…I do.  They didn’t even mind when I doctored up their 2011 sign for my own purposes.

ReDoSo next time you are in town, eat at Blue Water Grill.  Even if it was just food, I’d recommend it whole heartedly.  But when it comes to the entire package?  I think it’s somewhere you are going to want to visit again and again.

And don’t forget to drop off your donation by the cashier…it is matched and goes to some very worthy local causes.

For more information and their menu, check out their website.  And for pictures, specials, promotions (they sometimes give away free airfare to Belize!), follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
