My Week in Belize: From A Three Legged Cow Dog to Mind Blowing Sunsets

It’s been a busy week…and most importantly, a HUGE ONE for my favorite dog, Elsie – rescued from Dangriga last October.  Who, due to a long standing, unbeatable infection in her leg, had it removed on week ago Saturday.  YES!  Removed.  And she hasn’t really missed a beat.  She was tugging on her leash less than 24 hours later.

And now smiling in the sun…I don’t need that stinkin’ leg!

Love her.  She resides full time at Rojo Beach Bar with the entire dog pack.  She is particularly open to being fawned over.

And now to my usual hodgepodge of topics…

In the Tres Coco’s area of San Pedro (just about 1/2 a mile over this bridge) this tacky sign has been painted over!

I much prefer this sign.IMG_8751

We’ve seen pretty ridiculously gorgeous weather all week long.  This photo taken from the top of the Barry Bowen Bridge over the cut in the island.

IMG_8805Most beautiful, I found, by sunrise.  I was up for the 6am water taxi to Belize City on Wednesday and it was just spectacular.  Who knew?

Belize’s media houses and I headed out to the relatively new cane fields of Cayo.

I can’t get enough of my village person look.  Sadly, I didn’t get to keep the outfit.

The water taxi ride home…the sunset was amazing.  I took a ridiculous amount of pictures from the back of the boat.

Sailboat off the north tip of Caye Caulker – with a bit of an Instagram filter.  The others are as is…

I saw these gorgeous lavender bougainvilleas at Mata Rocks Resort.  Pink, often, fuscia?  All the time.  I’m not sure I ever noticed lavender.

I walked by the pool where I live a few times a day and DIDN’T USE IT!  Insanity…I know.

photo 2I don’t have a bike…but keep thinking I should get one.  I saw this super cool Huffy at Castillo’s Hardware.  $495bzd but they could give it to me for $400bzd.  Hmmmm….

I had some delicious nachos at Carlo & Ernie’s Runway Bar.  I love that they make them with flour tortilla chips rather than corn.  Only place on the island that does that?  I think so…

And lastly, I went to Ben Popik’s movie night at the Paradise Theater.  Sporadically, he picks a great movie that you’ve never heard of.  I LOVED THIS ONE.  “Idiocracy”…I thought it was hilarious…and smart.

The description on IMDB:  “Private Joe Bauers, the definition of “average American”, is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes five centuries in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed down that he’s easily the most intelligent person alive.”

I had a bag of movie popcorn.

And I’ll end it with my FAVORITE pictures of the week…maybe the year.  Taken by a friend of mine of her son and a few classmates at the SUPER CUTE Culture Day festivities.

culture day 2

They had Garifuna, Mennonite, Mestizo, East Indian and…Gringo culture.

Awesome.
