What’s New on Ambergris Caye These Days?
For a small island, there’s always quite a bit going on around San Pedro and this weekend kicked off one of the famous influxes of visitors. The Jerry Jeff Walkers and Camp Belize.
The famous songwriter and performer (here is one performance in 2015 and one I attended in 2014) is a sold out event.
His first official show is tomorrow night at Fido’s Bar. And you’ll hear banjos and guitars all over town as some of his performer fans do pickin’ parties at various bars. For two weeks, San Pedro goes country.
And then goes even a bit more Texas when Kelly McGuire arrives in town for his annual birthday trip. The only announced show that I’ve seen is at the new Dive Bar (about 1/2 mile north – the former Jolly Rogers) at 2pm Sunday, January 31st.
He’s got lots of friends and fans on this island.
That’s a photo of him at the old Palapa Bar location…I’m pretty sure he’ll be playing at the new. And I tried to take a decent picture of it at night…
We have a food truck on the island – kitted out by Chef Marvin formerly of Rojo Beach Bar. You can still see the Wonder Bread and Hostess stickers on the back. It’s awesome.
Saturday night was her opening – parked right across from Annie’s Pastries just north of the circle in town.
Mmmmmm….
We got two burritos, one of each type. And 1. they are HUGE. And 2. They are flavorful and packed with meat, cheese, rice, salsa verde. The steak was REALLY good.

Let’s continue to talk about EATING! The 5th Annual Rib BBQ Competition is scheduled!! You can see some of the previous ones below. This event is one of the highlights of the year and 2016 is bigger and better! More chefs = more ribs.
I get to be one of the judges and word on the street is that Jerry Jeff Walker will also be judging. How fun is that? January 26th. Watch for details on my facebook page FOR SURE.
Prizes are awarded for judges choice and peoples’ choice and the alley by Estel’s will be lined with up to 8 giant barbecues!
CARNAVAL IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! It’s almost impossible to believe that January is more than half over. Time flies when you are worried about getting your ducks in a row to go to INDIA!
The official dates are February 7 to February 9th. Here are the traffic rules.
Comparsas groups are being registered. Dancing groups in the street that are sometimes asking for donations, often cross dressing and always having an amazing time.
