My Week: My First Cold in Years, New Gas Station & Momo Goes to School

I’m back from my first cold/illness since the pandemic started.  Sick is going around town right now – the stomach, a fever, a stuffed head.  A cornucopia of fun symptoms.  Lasted for a few days and I’m definitely getting better.

I’m a big fan of Virogrip para la noche.  (I think it’s the Nyquil of…perhaps El Salvador?  Whatever it is…it WORKS)

I’m fully diving back into social distancing.  I learned a few things over the last couple years and #1 is:  Social distancing and hand washing work.

As does a bit of tea brewed from LOTS of ginger and turmeric (available at most fruit stands)

I will forever sing this song by the St Luke’s Methodist School kids when washing my hands.  It’s THE BEST.

Mocha goes to School

Yesterday was my first real day out feeling good.  It was time to take Mocha to finish school.  We adopted Mocha just over 3 years ago.  At that time, she was living on the dock next to Jeff docks his boats.

She and her sister (a brindle girl named Tigre) were left there for a few months while her previous owner spent a bit of time in the federal penitentary system.

Their mom is/was a pit bull, no one knows about the dad.  Potlicker I’m assuming.  Best breed in the universe.

Well…you know how the story goes.  Her sister disappeared 🙁  Mocha got pregnant and when she gave birth to 13 at the very beginning of the pandemic….we helped raise her family, get them adopted and now we have Momo.

Anyway…Mocha is a great dog.  She is also a submissive dog and a very reactive dog – especially when it comes to other dogs.  I can’t blame her.  She lived on a dock!

So it was time to take Mo to Kathy at Pampered Paws.  She knows SO much about dogs and dog behavior and we were there for an assessment and hopefully some training.

Spoiler alert:  I am the one who is going to need the most training.  I am the first to admit, I am more of a comforter and excuser than a leader.  This will change!

We got some information, we left Mo with Kathy.  And she was introduced slowly to more structured walks and then introduced to some other dogs in a very controlled manner.  It went great.  Kathy provides videos so you can see her reactions and how Kath works with your dog.

We signed up for a 4-day “immersion” course in May.  One on one.  I’m excited about this.  It’ll be nice to have less anxiety for us and for Mo and…shhhhhh don’t tell Jeff…but to consider adopting another dog from SAGA Humane Society.

Here’s how we kept ourselves busy while Mo was in training.

We stopped into Varela’s Lumber to buy some materials to extend our fence a bit higher.  Mocha, I forget to mention, is also very athletic and can jump our 4+ foot fence.

It was delivered yesterday evening.

We stopped in for some drinks at the new Farmhouse Cafe.  I’m a huge fan of their market just north of the bridge.  HUGE.  And this place looks great.  It’s above Fido’s Courtyard on Front Street in San Pedro.

And this ginger-mint frozen limeade is deeeelicious.

Great bathroom sign.

And then we pick up Mo and headed home.  This energetic, very watchful dog got home and fell asleep HARD.  Mentally exhausted.  Success!

And then the other.  The gas station that is going in here is coming along…

I am still hearing that there will be another one up by the junction with Secret Beach…that is coming next.
