Pop-Up Craft And Food Market at Caribbean Villas Hotel

Nothing unleashes the barely-contained-shopping-beast-filled-with-longing in me like arts and crafts. I hanker to be creative and crafty…I have buckets of collected shells, seeds, drifts woods, and dried leaves ready to turn into something extraordinary. Instead…they collect dust.

So I LOVE seeing artistry that others – with more talent and vision – have done. Yesterday I drove down to Caribbean Villas (about 1/2 mile south of town) for a Pop-Up Market on the beach. To revel in the craftiness of others…

Here’s what I saw.

And before you send me a message saying: I didn’t even know this was happening! Check my events calendar for upcoming events – this was on it. It’ll keep you in the know 😉

A gorgeous day.

Caribbean Villas on the beach

The night before, a few hundred guys and gals had arrived on the island. There is a Harley Davidson rally on the mainland. And the leather-clad riders were staying on the island for the weekend – minus the bikes. Many were staying at the resort.

I didn’t get any photos – folks were just waking up! But I DID attend the First Annual Harley Davidson Rally in 2014 – AND the second one in 2015 – and took lots of photos there if you want to check them out. So crazy to see bikes and bikers on the beach.

2nd Rally: Parade in Belize City and a Trip to Caye Caulker

Now let’s get to the crafts!

At the entrance, Caribbean Chicken was giving very tasty samples of some of their products. Yummy Jalapeno Chicken Ham and grilled chicken patties.

Debbie G of Debbie Does Crafts is a prime example of someone I am jealous of. The stones turned into turtles and toucans! I wanted it all!

I REALLY love the stones.

Gorgeous paintings by Sofie Lisbey of IslandArt Belize.

My friend Raul (and Mito) with deeelicious coconut truffes and more
Oils, silver jewelry and the CUTEST paintings by Wick and Broom

I snagged the super cutest paintings. I can’t wait to hang them. (Though Jeff is balking at them. He does not immediately recognize true cuteness 🙂 – he’ll get there)

Paintings by Papo and other local artists

I was also smitten by two of the paintings displayed by Papo’s Art Shop (You can find the shop on the south end of Back Street in San Pedro – under Angler’s Restaurant) I love the one above of the old dock at the Barcadaro (Back a Back Street in San Pedro)

There’s also a fantastic one of Front Street San Pedro – about 15 years ago. Before it was paved.

These lovely folks gave me an icy cup of cucumber water and a sample of a DELICIOUS brownie. You can find their little shop on Back Street – across from Caye Supplies. (If you are ever hungry and you want to grab something quick – THE BROWNIES or…they make a killer cheese dip) Check out Sip and Smile.

And then Colleen – making beautiful hand-crafted silver jewelry. I LOVE these rings – cast in Ambergris Caye sand so they have all the texture and then set with tiny sparkling stones. I mean…I want one. It’s kinda the perfect souvenir.

To check out her work, see FantaSea Gems.

One of the first people I met when I visited Ambergris Caye in 2006 – Cindy of The Lunchbox Belize. Making and selling all sort of yummy products. From pickles to peanut butter.

I tried to sneak out. I really wanted one of Papo’s paintings and…it makes no sense right now! We’ve got A TON going on.

I headed out with my tiny ladies paintings and a pack of cacao granola bars. I passed this CRAZY new construction where the bar Crazy Canuck’s used to be. Now a Marriott Residences?

And I grabbed a plate of BBQ (BOTH rice and beans and tortillas) from my buddy Tino outside Caye Mart Supermarket.

That’s it for now. I’m heading to Belize City tomorrow to run lots of errands…

I’ll report back. Have a lovely Sunday.

I see Mito holding up my book, thank you! It was a very interesting read – loaded with history and pictures of San Pedro becoming a tourist destination. It should be required reading for anyone moving to the island. When I went their 10 years ago I had a blast but didn’t really learn much about it. But now, after reading his book, your book (50 Big Experiences), and every ‘Scoop’ going back to 2011 – I’m confident I know more about the island than I do my own hometown.
    Thank you so much…
