A Bit Of Rain Predicted & My Season of Hollywood Showers
After sharing pictures of the impossibly still and clear Caribbean Sea and the bright blue skies…October rain might be coming. Daytime rain, I mean. We’ve been seeing some heavy rains overnight – and last night was no exception. Cisterns are overflowing for those not on “town water – that means the folks who live more than 1/4 mile north of the bridge, all the residents of the Secret Beach area, and the far far end of south Ambergris Caye.
We’ve got cisterns that gasp for water from about January to late May, now they are overflowing.
Here’s a 2023 article about Improving and Expanding Water Services for the Island with a North Ambergris Water Plant, but when on Ambergris Caye, I find that unless you see it with your own eyes – it’s best not to bank on it.
NOW is the time for “Hollywood showers,” happy plants (and a great time to plant new ones), hooray! But also muddy golf cart rides into town (the road north is a hot mess)…wet shorts flicked with sludgy mud.
There is a bit of a weather system cooking to our south. It doesn’t look like it will be any more than a rainy, sloppy mess over the coming weekend, with some winds (but NOT tropical storm strength), but it is certainly something to keep an eye on.
Here are the main weather sites I like to look at this time of year:
National Hurricane Center…of course. Here’s what they are showing this morning.

Weather for Ambergris Caye in particular…I liked Windfinder.com. Is it 100% this time of year? No. But I find it to be pretty good – one to two days out. (Max!)
My favorite weather symbol – very popular in the late summer/fall months

Full sun but also full rain = we have no freaking idea.
Also remember at this time of year when the weather is tempestuous, forecasts change easily.
You can also run all sorts of fun models on Windy.com, TropicalTidbits.com and Ventusky.com if you are feeling particularly nerdy.
And now two things. The North Ambergris Alliance has the next island clean-up scheduled for this Saturday – to bring together the community, the town council and who ever wants to help together clean up what we are calling MILE 2: From The Truck Stop to El Pescador. There are some very icky spots in there that I can’t wait to tackle. We are DEFINITELY keeping an eye on the weather too – and will postpone the event if needed the night before. Here is the flyer – follow us on Facebook at North Ambergris Alliance for updates.
Please join us and get things moving in the right direction.

Also, here are some quick pics I took yesterday. A morning of errands – getting pulled over at a Traffic Check-Point (I swear…I thought we’d updated our Registration!) – working and some baking.
Here they are.
But first…one from one year ago today that makes me happy. The Eclipse (Jeff doesn’t usually stand around with his mouth hanging open like this)

Now yesterday.

The perfect seawall – at the Phoenix Resort.

The Palapa Bar.

And on my ride home – Donovan, who sells coconut water and conch carvings waved. I pulled over for a quick chat and to take a picture of him and his gorgeous dog, Panther. (She’s a girl)

I couldn’t get them smiling at once so I’ve got two photos for you.

Speaking of panthers…later that evening our dog Frannie REALLY wanted to go outside and I soon saw why. My kittens’ (deadbeat) father was outside. He is a feral cat who doesn’t seem to miss any meals and he. is. HUGE. We call him Block Head for obvious reasons.
Here are our kittens – Blockhead’s sons – and they are seven months old. I thought they were big!

Now LOOK AT BLOCKHEAD!

The kittens are minuscule in comparison. I am NOT ready.

Your kittens are gorgeous. Blockhead made some lovely babies!
I’ll tell him you said so 😉 I think the kittens are sooo good looking but it’s hard to have any perspective as a mom 🙂
Good morning.
Arrived on island yesterday afternoon. Look forward to the Island Cleanup this Saturday then ride down to the Pop up Bazaar. We LOVE Ambergris Caye and ALL of BELIZE.
Blockhead looks like a normal size cat to me…
You could be right. All the feral cats I’ve seen in this area – and actually in Belize as a whole as tiny little peanuts. Even the ones I’ve adopted from SAGA as adults…7lbs…8 max. This guy is clearly getting fed by someone!
