Ambergris Caye Expecting a VERY Rainy Weekend – Stay Alert Re: Tropical Storm Sara

As we stand now (Friday morning at about 8am Belize Time) – we are expecting rain…lots of rain on an already waterlogged country…over the next few days. Tropical Storm Sara is currently centered near La Ceiba Honduras and the Bay Islands (Roatan) and making it’s way towards Belize as a Tropical Storm.

Thank goodness it is not predicted to be anything stronger, as some of the models predicted a few days ago. Sara has stayed more south, is expected to rub up against land (and weaken), and, it is forecasted, bring lots and lots of rain.

Our NEMO (National Emergency Management Organization in Belize) is calling for 5 to 10 inches. There are reported of flooding on the mainland – there has been flash flooding in the last week due to heavy rains and saturated land.

On Ambergris Caye, I can attest to the unpaved road north being BAD – especially around Costa Blu (about 7 miles north) and north of there. There is a HUGE low area that becomes a lake around Miles 9-10 between La Belize and Sapphire Beach that I imagine will be impassable at some point this weekend. I am not going to attempt to head to town today – and I imagine I will be at home for the weekend.

Events will be canceled due to rain and flooding so check on meetings and activities before heading out (if you are heading out at all!)

For local daily/hourly forecasting (weather is changeable, especially in a storm situation)

Not the greatest news but far from the worst. A very very very rainy weekend with special caution around low lying areas on the island. Here is the official report from NEMO (you can find more information and updates on their Facebook page)

Be sure to watch these pages -and the situation carefully. Be safe and stay as dry as you can everyone.

As you mentioned the road north at mm 9-10 needs to be addressed. Dump trucks running that road should lay some fill down. Would benefit everyone. Time to do it is when it is flooded so they know how much fill to lay down.
