December 2024: Daily Events Calendar on Ambergris Caye

This is a list of the many DECEMBER 2024 events and activities around Ambergris Caye. But before I dive into the calendar, let’s start with the big-picture questions.

In December, what is the weather like in Belize? What big events – festivals and parties – are happening in December?

The tourism season comes in with a BANG. The island is seasonally quiet from September to mid-November and really picks up for Thanksgiving break visitors. The first few weeks of December (until Christmas week, really) can be slow. But then BOOM! Christmas week. (December 25th is a Wednesday this year)

The Hurricane Season officially ended November 30th and we had a Tropical Storm LATE this year. TS Sara blew into Belize mid-November and left us SOAKED with rain. But she’s gone and the island is dry and the end of November weather has been gorgeous.

The weather has generally cooled off from the summer heat (high 80s and LOTS of humidity), and there is sun in December. Though not technically considered the rainy season, we can get some rainy days in December. Temperatures are generally in the upper 70s to low-mid 80s.

I check the weather on Windfinder always knowing that this is the tropics and weather is quite changeable. So you can really only trust the forecast a day or two out. And…temperature is reliably warm on the island – so it’s the wind that really rules the weather. If the wind is coming from the north, it’s a good day to stay on the reef side. A north wind turns the usually calm and gorgeous Secret Beach waters choppy.

Obviously, December has some BIG holidays. Christmas and New Years are both a big deal in Belize and on the island. Almost everything is open for these days – supermarkets, tour companies, restaurants – it is on of the busiest times of the year for visitors. You maybe find some smaller businesses closed so they can celebrate with family but fear not…just about everyone will be open and ready for the bustling crowds of the holidays.

That said…if you have your heart set on a particular tour or need a golf cart or you want a special meal at your favorite restaurant, message them AHEAD to get a reservation during this week.

December is a month that you can enjoy both Lobster and Conch. I LOVE CONCH. It’s sweet and delicious and very traditionally San Pedro. You MUST try conch ceviche, fried conch (or conch fingers) and the Truck Stop makes an amazing garlicky Conch Pizza. Definitely recommend.

The official dates: Lobster Season is July 1st to Feb 28th. Conch Season is October 1st to June 1st (though it has been known to close early – May or early June – when quotas are filled)

And LASTLY, since we are at the tail end of the rainier season, there may be some lingering showers and perhaps some mosquitos. Fear not, this Mosquito Repellent is my best purchase/find of the past 10 years. Spray or lotion, it lasts forever, is not sticky or smelly and WORKS. (As I copy this link, Amazon says that I have ordered this item 24 times…

December 1st, Sunday

Elito’s BIG Trash Clean-up, After Tropical Storm Sara LOTS Of beach trash washed across the roadway up north, Starting at El Norte (Mile 10) at around 8am…all the way up to Tranquility Bay (Mile 14) followed by a beach BBQ at Elito’s House (About mile 15) – for more info, contact him on Facebook – should be a hot fun sweaty morning 🙂

An amazing event at The Hut from 2-5pm, just north of town, here are SOME of the details, click here for all. Two chances to support the island community… Drop in anytime between 2 and 5 PM to paint an SHELL ornament with proceeds going to the Eco Museum… suggested minimum per shell of $10BZ. (All ages!)…dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies that will be sold with all sales going to the family of Izac Belise as they face a second round of chemotherapy to fight his childhood cancer.

For the next few days – Christmas Eve to Boxing Day – it’s best to double-check the weekly events to see if they are still happening. Some smaller businesses will close a bit during this time to celebrate with family. The best place to check all events in San Pedro is Facebook.

December 31, Tuesday New Year’s Eve

New Years Eve is a fun celebration in San Pedro – whether you have a nice dinner out or head to town for music and fireworks at midnight. I’ll list events as I get them…almost every larger restaurant and all bars will be celebrating!

Ring in the British New Year at 6pm for everyone who likes to head to bed a bit earlier (me, me, me!) at Caribbean Villas, about 1/2 mile south of town (I might make it up to Brazil New Years- which is 3 hours ahead of Belize)
