Tropical Storm Sara Dissipates But Leaves a Drenched Belize
Tropical Storm Sara has moved out but she’s left Belize inundated with water. Overflowing rivers on the mainland and flooded roads and yards throughout the country…it is going to take days before the seas’ waters clear and weeks before the flood water receded completely.
Areas in northern Honduras got up to 40 inches of water from this storm (holy shit)…Ambergris Caye, I’m hearing 15 inches in some areas.
And yes…I had to google the largest rainfall ever in one day. Here it is: The most rainfall ever recorded in a single day was 71.8 inches (1.825 meters) in Foc-Foc, La Réunion, an island in the southern Indian Ocean (about 400 miles east of Madagascar), from January 7 to 8, 1966. This record was set during the passage of Cyclone Denise. (Here are some more crazy weather records…if you like this kinda thing)
The International Airport reopened this morning at 6am and water taxis are now running.
I have not driven to town yet (since Saturday morning) – but we’ll be headed out to see how the roads are later this morning. Hopefully we can make it.
For now, I’ve only been to the beach and our flooded yard. Here are a few pics. I just want to check in with y’all.
An insect site identified this photo as a White Peacock butterfly. Pretty cool.
It’s November 18th. SURELY we can call this Storm Season over. Right? I see that we are expecting our first North Wind Cold Front of the season later this week. Temps dropping into the low to mid-70s!
