March 2025: Daily Events Calendar on Ambergris Caye

This is a list of the many MARCH 2025 events and activities around Ambergris Caye. But before I dive into the calendar, let’s start with the big-picture questions.

If it is your first time on the island, see Your Guide to Ambergris Caye.

March is still the height of the busy season on the island with Spring Break (think families not Daytona-MTV Spring Break). This year Carnaval (Carnival or Mardi Gras) takes place during the first few days of March (you can read more about this very interesting, only-in-San-Pedro, fun time here). Also, a few weeks ago, National Elections were called for March 12. (Here is what you can expect from Election Day in Belize) Do not be surprised if you run into a rally or a parade during the days leading up to the event – and on Election night, after the winner is announced.

The mainland and the Belize River hosts the biggest athletic event of the year – La Ruta Maya. A grueling for the athletes, very fun to watch for the spectators 3 day canoe race from San Ignacio in Western Belize to Belize City.

If you are a business that wants to add to this list, please send me the information at sa***********@*****il.com.

Weather in March on Ambergris Caye

The rainy season really lingered this year. Usually we see the end of any rains in the first week of Janary and then we settle in for the DRY season. Without more than a drop or two of rain until May or June. But this year, we got rain into the last few weeks of February. Strange. BUT…the dry season is REALLY here now. Don’t be surprised if you don’t see one drop of rain in March. Sun…all sun.

See this website for the best weather forecast I have found for this island.

What can start in March are the “Easter Winds”. The wind can really pick up at times blowing steadily up to 25 or even 30 mph (again, see the weather site above). This can make the reef side of the island blustery – sometimes sand will blow about. But just travel over to the west side – the Secret Beach side of the island – and you’ll find beautiful calm seas.

February might be the best weather of the year. You are going to get SUN and mild temperatures. Temps are generally in the upper 70s to low-mid 80s. The sun is out. And the higher “Easter Winds” haven’t kicked in yet.

I check the weather on Windfinder always knowing that this is the tropics and weather is quite changeable. So you can really only trust the forecast a day or two out.

Sargassum in March:

Sargassum is a brown algae/seaweed that floats in big mats atop the ocean and has lots of positive benefits. It’s a nursery for young sealife and turtles. But…especially since 2015 in Belize…amounts have increased and huge piles of this stuff have washed up on shores around the Caribbean and Mexico and southern USA (and all over the world)

Some sargasso but not a ton
Some sargassum – there can be more, there can be less

The influx in Belize – and the Yucatan Coast (from Cancun on down) has a very loose season. I think it’s the ocean currents…or the winds or the gulf stream flow…maybe all those things 🙂

Sargassum season, in my estimation, is mid-January to August based on previous years.

Last year (2024), it did not come in until the end of February and our beaches were mostly clear until then. Some years are worse than others. It affects, as far as I can tell, just about every Caribbean island.

So far in 2025, we had some come in during the 3rd week in January…and then on and off periods – none TOO bad. We had a bunch come in this first week of March and then again mid-March. This seaweed affects ONLY the EAST or reef side of the island while the west side (and the Secret Beach area) stays seaweed-free.

West side of the island- at Secret Beach

Seafood in March:

Lobster Season ended February 28th and will reopen on July 1st – the 2025 Lobsterfestival takes place in the beginning of July with the big block party on July 12th.

Conch season is OPEN. The conch season in Belize ends June 30th. And reopens October 1st.

Before I get into March, here are some things coming up this April to watch out for:

  • Easter: Easter is a BIG weekend in San Pedro – many Belizeans travel to the island to hang out with family and to PARTY! Water taxis will be jammed starting on the Wednesday before Easter. And the Monday after Easter – called “Easter Monday” is a holiday as well. Easter is April 20th be ready 🙂 Here is a post about what to Expect on Easter weekend on Ambergris Caye.

Here are the events around San Pedro and Ambergris Caye for March 2025. There is an event called Chase the Ace where you buy a drink, get a ticket and a chance to pick a card and win money…it can be lots of money. Someone won big on January 14th so they are on break but…See the POT size, check when it restarts and more details here.

Today is a National Holiday in Belize – Heroes and Benefactors Day. It was changed names fairly recently (ChatGPT tells me 2021…but that could be a AI hallucination) – though the idea is the same. Here’s some more information on the man and the day.
