May 2025: Daily Events Calendar for Ambergris Caye
This is a list of the many MAY 2025 events and activities around Ambergris Caye. You can find this one and the most recent daily calendars on my homepage (so you don’t need to go searching…)
But before I dive into the calendar, let’s start with the big-picture questions.

Note: If it is your first time on the island, see Your Guide to Ambergris Caye. AND The 13 Things I Think Every Visitor Should Do on Her First Trip
Belize’s “High Season” has ended (Christmas to Easter, generally) and things will start to slow down…be less crowded. Winter in the US and Canada is (mostly) over – and folks take less warm weather trips abroad and tend to travel closer to home.
Let’s talk about the hot weather…
Weather in May on Ambergris Caye
May can be HOT. Temperatures usually in the mid 80s during the day (and not much lower at night) But the humidity is ramping up. We are moving towards the wetter season, but in May, don’t expect much precipitation.
See this website for the best weather forecast I have found for this island.
The “Easter Winds” – higher winds (over 20 mph) that tend to blow from the east during parts of late March and April. These winds can really pick up at times blowing steadily up to 25 or even 30 mph (again, see the weather site above). This can make the reef side of the island blustery – sometimes, sand will blow about. While we can have a windy day in May…or a few strung together…it lessens as we move into summer…
But if it is going to be very windy, just travel over to the west side – the Secret Beach side of the island – and you’ll find beautiful calm seas.

I check the weather on Windfinder always knowing that this is the tropics and weather is quite changeable. So you can really only trust the forecast a day or two out.
Sargassum (and Other Phenomena) in May:
Sargassum is a yellowish-brown algae/seaweed that floats in big mats atop the ocean and has lots of positive benefits…until it reaches the shore. Asea, it’s a nursery for young sea life and turtles.
But…especially since 2015 in Belize…amounts have increased and huge piles of this stuff have washed up on shores around the Caribbean and Mexico and southern USA (and all over the world)

The influx in Belize – and the Yucatan Coast (from Cancun on down) has a very loose “season”. I think it’s the ocean currents…or the winds or the gulf stream flow…maybe all those things 🙂
Sargassum season, in my estimation, is LOOSELY mid-January to August based on my observations over the years.
Last year (2024), it did not come in until the end of February – our beaches were mostly clear until then.
In 2025, we had some come in during the third week of January, and then there were periods of on and off activity. We had a bunch come in this first week of March and then, mid-March, it REALLY started coming in. 🙁 April, May and June can see heavy influxes of sargassum – and that has proven true in May so far…
This seaweed affects ONLY the EAST or reef side of the island while the west side (and the Secret Beach area) stays seaweed-free.

If you are staying at a resort or a hotel, most staff work very hard to clean up the area…but it can still pile up.
Sahara Dust: Spring can also bring Sahara dust to the Caribbean. Last year, in the beginning of May, we had a serious dust cover – blotting out the sun in the morning and clearing a bit as the day went on. This year, it hasn’t affected us. It seems to drift over every few years…you can keep an eye on it here.
Seafood in May:
Lobster is out of season in May. Lobster Season ends February 28th and will reopen on July 1st – the 2025 Lobster Festival takes place in the beginning of July with the big block party on July 12th.
But better than Caribbean lobster…Conch season is OPEN. The conch season in Belize ends June 30th (AMENDMENT: It was announced on May 8 that the last day of Conch Season is MAY 25! We have hit our quotas!) And reopens October 1st. Make SURE to eat conch when you are here in May. Ceviche, fried, delicious conch soup. It’s so tasty.
