Highlights, Lowlights and My Favorite Photos From September

September is a combination of slow tourism and lively Independence celebrations, of hot, humid, blazing sunshine, and the potential for epic rainstorms with lots of thunder and lightning. It’s often the month where a bunch of businesses close to rest, renovate and get ready for the new season.

Our camp was no exception. I was holding down the fort – praying away any storm that might approach – while Jeff flew up to British Columbia, spending his time at his friend’s spot, spending days knee-deep in chilly river fishing for steelhead salmon. The hurricane map was clear – we had lots of hot hot sun.

96 degrees in the shade on Back A Back Street – folks usually selling local fruits and veg there on Mondays and Tuesdays

Here are some of my most memorable pictures and moments from September 2025. For information on what to expect in October – here is my write-up about the weather, what to expect, events and CONCH!

The biggest news is that we adopted Rosie Marshwallow Grinchy from SAGA Humane Society during the last week of August so September was her first full month. After a few weeks of “I’m not sure this is going to work” with our cats, the 1.5 year old brothers Cashew and Mango, things are WAY better. Not perfect but way better.

Rosie, adopted at 13lbs is definitely putting some needed ounces on. She still is CRAZY for food but she’s just starting to realize that her meals are a set and certain thing.

I got this pic of the motorcycle rider and his cute cute sideman, Blaze while driving around town. I wonder how/if Rosie is related to this guy…

The weather was hot and gorgeous – the sargassum that has been a nightmare for much of the year was slowing way down and the water was looking gorgeous…

And then…the second week of September we had RAIN. 2 or 3 days with lots of flooding showers. Our roads north flood way too quickly.

Some rainy weather comfort food – an AMAZING concha from Annie’s Bakery. If you haven’t tried conchas – this one, warm, is heaven. Better than any donut anywhere. (You can read my post: Conchas, or in Belize, Caprichios, My New Obsession)

Concha from Annies
Annie’s opens at 1pm – and you can often get one fresh out of the oven. If not, 5 secs in the microwave…

Additional comfort food! I had some really really REALLY good beef soup at Sweet Tutz Restaurant on Back Street. I love this place – they do great daily specials at very reasonable prices and the servings are big and delicious. It’s always busy…if you haven’t tried it out, do it.

They were sold out of the Friday Beef Soup special when I went in…and I think I made such a sad face that they found one for me. So good…

I LOVE that soup in Belize comes with coconut rice and fresh tortillas come on the side – so nothing is soggy. I also love that Sweet Tutz served cilantro and chopped onion. The onion was SO GOOD IN THERE. Mmm…now I want some more

Jet’s Bar at the International Airport covered in stickers – here’s my last update on this famous spot. Jet is retired and home…I always ask about him when I pass through.

Jeff sent me a picture from Jet’s Bar at the International Airport – the camp sticker, right in the middle

I’m really bouncing between subjects here! This picture is the famous Margaritaville flip flop being moved out of Margaritaville Belize – which is no more. The spot is NOT closing – it has just been rebranded. Here’s the new website. (You can also read my posts over the years – from 2018 when it was first announced and how I thought it was NOT a good fit for Belize – to the ribbon cutting ceremony in October 2023)

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere…else

Let’s fast forward! To September 21st when the rain cleared and the annual parade danced thru town. (All the pics here)

The one-ish week break in the sargassum that made us think that MAYBE it was over for the year…ended. Sargassum is still coming in.

Belly doesn’t mind a little sargassum

Let me wrap this up with my favorite picture. Many folks know this gentleman – maybe from the gas station just north of the bridge where he works now. He is friendly and always smiling – and he is also Rosie uncle…tio…her godfather. She was living at the gas station when we first met her…and “Paps” as many call him, was minding her.

Well…I was at the gas station early one day…picking up the Coast Guard guys for a trash clean-up and…apparently he is kind to all animals.

Paps and his friends.

Miami got slammed this week with sargassum. About 20 feet wide and 15 inches or more thick.

    A beachcomber’s lament:

“Walking through tangles of smelly sargassum,
My flip-flops protest with a squelch and a sigh.
I scoff at the sea’s gift with bitter sarcasm,
While seabirds above take aim from the sky”

So did Margaritaville change its name to PiñaColadaVille?

    • San Pedro Scoop on October 8th, 2025 at 7:26 pm

I think it would be RumPunchVille or maybe PantyRipperVille iN Belize? I forgot to include the new name but it’s hard to remember…Caribe something? Grand Ambergris…lemme look.
