A Good-Bye Party Way Up North or Nothing is Ever Easy
Life in Belize is simple but it’s never easy.
I don’t know who told me years ago…probably more than one person. But I remember it at least once a week. It doesn’t mean life in Belize is a slog…far from it. Infrastructure can be shaky, time can be….fluid, supplies can be limited or non-existent. Things ALWAYS break…and remain broken for longer than you would like.
I guess it boils down to:
Life in the US can be complicated but it is predictable. Life in Belize can be simple it is unpredictable! Adaptability is king.
Sunday we went to a Going Away Party – for Coleen and Rick who have lived on the island for at least as long as I have (18 or 19 years)…maybe longer.
They built a house 16 miles north when that was really THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE. It still is…but just a bit less so.
The first time I visited their house was for a Bocce Ball Party in 2013 – just LOOK at the beach and water back then…before sargassum was even a thing.
The views are just as spectacular.
There was no driving up there 13 years ago – the road even a few miles north of town was a mud hole for at least a few months each year. This time, Jeff and I drove up in a Polaris that has been…giving trouble.
It seems these vehicles are more…computers – sensors and codes – than the golf carts. Which seem to be belts and plugs…
You can see how much I know about vehicles.
Anyway…off we went.
We picked our dog Biscuit up at Tranquility Bay on the way up. She is quite the social butterfly and when there are no guests at the camp…she heads for more excitement. Following passerbys down to Tranquility Bay or Reef Haven (the old Margaritaville)

Who knew that Belizean Dingos were soooo social.
At the party.

After a few hours we decided it was time to drop Biscuit off at the camp – and head back south…home.
Silly me…easier said than done.
We broke down about 1/4 mile north…gas pedal…some sensor. A few groups stopped to help us. Folks are so great about helping push…even on a very hot very dusty road.

We limped up to a friend house to leave the Polaris there. This was going to require a real mechanic. And no one’s coming for it at 3pm on a Sunday. No way.
We got walking…we thought it with walked about a mile…we’d make it to Tranquility Bay and hopefully hitch a ride with someone driving south. Sigh…

We didn’t have to walk too long. We got to the beach side and saw….A BOAT! Slow moving because the waters north of Tranquility Bay are shallow and riddled with coral heads.
Friends coming down from the party. We scurried out onto a dock to wave them down.

Passing Tranquility…now by boat. Hooray!

Where’s Biscuit you ask? She went back to the party…ditched us on our walk…
We got a picture of her while on the boat from Coleen. Biscuit’s back.

SO nice to take a boat ride! Coated in dirt, we were glad to be home.
Hope you had a great weekend too.

Cute post. It is definitely unpredictable in Belize, and you have to get used to it and think positively or else it gets to you. Especially when your golf cart breaks down in the most remote areas.
I often say – in Belize, there’s always a plan ‘B’ – and sometimes they turn out better than whatever plan ‘A’ was……broken down vehicles, aside😎
…jus another day in bloody paradise.
Hmmm….literally just got back from Bacalar and Calderitas Mexico via Chetumal….starting to think this island of Ambergrise Caye is not paradise.
