Catching the Tail End of LobsterFest in Caye Caulker

Pun NOT intended. But also…not deleted.

Last weekend, Jamie (my bestie visiting from NJ for a month) and I attended Lobsterfest in Caye Caulker. I’d booked the one-way flight almost 2 months ago. The very last tickets available for the 5-minute flight over the long Lobsterfest weekend.

The event starts Friday evening…and is an all-day and night Saturday event and then winds down on Sunday. The last tickets available on Tropic Air or Maya Island Air were Sunday at 2pm. I snapped them up. Not realizing that they were probably still open because the World Cup Finals would be playing.

Oh well…we caught the first half of the game…I mean, match…at the Blue Water Grill on San Pedro. And then the end of the game – in over-time…extra minutes? in the midst of the Lobsterfest. And though me caring about soccer seems like a distant dream…I do remember that it was SO FUN and exciting to watch in the crowd.

Instead of messing up all the soccer-terminology, let me just show you my pictures.

We did 3 days and 3 nights in Caye Caulker and had SUCH a good time. Especially staying at Weezie’s Oceanfront Hotel. A spot I’d heard about…and found a great summer price for on Booking.com…and it is SPECTACULAR. Incredible staff and location and rooms and…we LOVED it there. I’d stay there again in a heartbeat. An incredible treat.

But to Lobsterfest! (I’ll share lots more photos of Weezie’s and the beautiful island of Caye Caulker over the next week for sure – LOTS)

I’ve only flown to Caye Caulker (and disembarked from the plane) ONCE. For the Grand Opening of the Caye Caulker Tropic Air terminal…a few months before COVID.

I chose the plane despite the price (about 3x the water taxi price) for a special treat. The water taxis are PACKED during Lobsterfest – and there are long lines to buy tickets and then to board…and the last time I tried, I wasn’t there in time to get on the boat. So I opted for the just over $50USD one way plane ticket with TropicAir.

We checked into the hotel and got a taxi ride to the center of the village. (Weezie’s is near the air strip…and we wanted to get there ASAP since the festival was already starting to wrap up)

Where San Pedro Lobster offerings are way more varied and often more “fancy” – from Lobster bisque and Lobster cheesecake to Lobster Corn Dogs and Lobster Ravioli, Caye Caulker is more like a big family block party.

LOTS of grilled lobster and some lobster ceviche and tacos…they keep it pretty simple and delicious.

We walked down the strip for a bit but I’d already decided to get the classic grilled lobster with rice and beans.

The music and the crowds were down at Sip N Dip…towards the Split.

There is definitely sargassum on the reef side but…fast forward to the next morning and the wind had shifted slightly and the water was looking gorgeous!

But I ate quick…the over-time was getting heated in the World Cup finals…and it was playing on the main stage.

We stood in the sun but the majority of folks were behind me under tents and to my side…

It was HOT…I mean red hot…and we lasted until the end of the watch. GO SPORTS! And headed back to the blissfully cool air conditioning at Weezie’s. PHEW.
