My First Lobster of The Season: A Favorite, Elvi’s Kitchen

I really like lobster…I don’t love it. Controversial? Maybe. It’s usually one of the more expensive items on any menu…so when I do choose it, I want it to be GREAT. If you spent 75 bucks…or more on dinner, I wouldn’t blame you if you are a bit grouchy when it’s not fantastic.

So I didn’t want to mess with my first bite. I picked one of my favorite restaurants on the island for my first taste of lobster of the season. They have great food – both inventive and classic dishes – great service and a lovely classic, very Belizean ambiance. I’m a huge fan.

Just inside…

Here are some of my favorite experiences I’ve written about at Elvi’s Kitchen:

Ok…back to the present day.

Lobster season officially opened on July 1st…as did San Pedro’s Lobster Fest.

A reminder of the festivals around Belize…

Jeff and I went to Elvi’s Kitchen yesterday for a bit of lobster and one of our favorite menus on the island.

The bar area as you enter…a nice spot to sit if you are a one- or two….

The menu came, and I stumbled into more controversy. I wanted to try the lobster roll. The waiter, smartly, told me twice that it was a cold, mayo-based lobster roll.

The lobster roll – $45bzd

Better known in the USA as a MAINE Lobster Roll. Cold lobster chunks mixed with mayo and sometimes finely chopped celery and lemon, slathered on a split roll. As opposed to the CONNECTICUT Lobster Roll. Which is warm lobster chunks tossed in butter on a grilled split roll. And people, especially New Englanders, take this distinction veeeerrrryyyy seriously.

They are both very tasty. But I like Elvi’s choice. Caribbean lobster is a bit less fatty than Maine Lobster. And a nice mayo – and Elvi’s mayo is delicious…very lime-y and fresh – can really make the lobster even better.

I had to get an order of fries too!

And it did. The lime POPS. And this lobster roll is delicious.

We also split another favorite of mine – the Mango BBQ Chipotle beef tacos. I love the sauces on the side.

The view from our seat…the sand floor, the palapa roof…and the old original flamboyant tree from the original burger stand FIFTY YEARS AGO!

Elvi’s has changed quite a bit but the original feel is still there. Family run, Belizean classic but with flair.

Here’s a painting that hangs inside of the original Elvi’s with the flamboyant abloom.

I definitely recommend Elvi’s to everyone who visits. And two big features I forgot to mention. They are now fully air-conditioned which during the HOT summer months is a delight. AND, they are open from lunch to dinner. So…if you are peckish at 4pm…early dinner/late lunch….cocktail…a slice of their insanely good frozen Caye Lime pie…they are open.

Inventive cocktails

Oh…and I found a new thing to rave about. Very weird I’ll admit.

They have the best bathroom hardware on the island. An underrated category…or one I just invented.

Get ready for it.

Not impressed? Here’s the facts: easy open/close. No grimy door knob to handle when you are leaving. And best feature? It’s very easy to see that the door is locked. Few things worse than sitting on the toilet wondering if someone is about to bust in on you…

I’m sorry to end my food post with toilet talk but it’s just to good to ignore.

Thanks Elvi’s for my first lobster of the season. Delicious.

For hours, menus, reservations (recommended during the busiest months for dinner – Christmas – April I’d guess) and all the information, check out their website.

It’s hard to find a good lobster roll. I will continue the search-I’m in the other camp . Heading there for the “key lime pie contest” haha! There isn’t one , except my own personal quest, but there needs to be. I will keep my top pick a secret, for now .

The key lime there is my favorite – i love the frozen…I love the ginger crust. My only complaint is…I wanna bigger slice! NO SECRETS! Or…please send me an email…I want your top!

We’ve liked Elvi’s since 1991. We’ve known Elena since Jade Garden days. Elvi’s is as good as it ever was…and it just keeps getting better.

I visited in 2023 for the lobster festival and had dinner at Elvi’s . The food was amazing a lobster so delicious and fresh
That key lime desert was amazing , but the soursop margarita was to die for.
The whole San Pedro experience was and is something I still talk about now in 2026! Something extra special about this island.

One of my best lobster experiences in San Pedro was Elvi’s Kitchen for Thanksgiving dinner in 2021 or 2022. The Caribbean lobster isn’t as good as Maine’s, I agree, but with all the fixins and plenty of fresh lime on top…yum. I’m a huge fan of the mayo-forward lobster roll but haven’t had one since a trip to Boston in 1997, I believe it was. Went down really easy. As a young child (up until four years old), my family lived in Boston, vacationed in Maine, and my mother tells me that “yobster” was my favorite food!

Oops, make that 2011 or 2012…slip of the fingers (or brain!)
