Pics from the BLAZING HOT September 10th Uniform Parade

September in Belize promises a few things: the start of the school year, Independence Celebrations, and intense HEAT. There is no heat like strong tropical heat. None.

September 10th is the first official national holiday that kicks off Belize’s September Celebrations. It celebrates the legendary tale of a small, scrappy bunch of British Baymen and their slaves who, in 1798, drove off a far larger Spanish fleet off St. George’s Caye…securing the settlement that would become Belize.

It has my favorite holiday song in the world (yes…better than any Christmas carol, I think…what Christmas carols make you want to dance? Maybe Feliz Navidad…I do love Neil Diamond’s Coming to America…it’s so dramatic…hmmm. Let me know if you have any picks for the title of Best Holiday Song.)

Listen to 10th September by Lord Rhaburn and Calypso Rose. SO GOOD.

On the 10th, there is an official Uniform Parade in town. Kids gather at 10 am to hear a prayer, sing the national anthem, get a pep talk from our Mayor as they all work up a SERIOUS sweat.

The hotter it gets in Belize, the more umbrellas come out…

We’d had the first big rain about a month and a half (hola El Nino mejor) and the sun was HOT, the humidity was HIGH and good lord…I almost passed out. Like for reals.

Here are some of my pictures. (And now that I go thru them…I really thought I took like 100 or more photos…but I took less than 1/4 of that! I’m telling you…the heat was really getting to me!)

Arriving by foot, by bike and by cart
The outfits!
Everyone started lining up
They all just look SO great

And then the parade was starting…and I went to find something to eat…maybe a piece of fruit and…I started to feel light headed. Heat index in the 100s and only 10am…I stumbled down Middle Street and found the AC blasting at the Greenhouse. Like an oasis in a desert…

Adan pulled out a stool when he saw me squatting…ridiculous! Heat? Age? Heat and age? I felt silly but sat on that stool for a solid 10 minutes until…I heard the parade coming!

Stool oasis

Gatorade in hand (blue…duh!) I headed back out in the sun.

Hip hip hooray!

Here comes the new Miss San Pedro – just a week or two into her reign – and Little Miss San Pedro and Mayor Wally.

I watched a bit more and headed home…to a cool shower and…good lawd…to cool down.

Ambergris North Alliance is organizing a clean up for Service Day – come join in!

Wow, did you do that? No pop ups blocking and distracting all the info you send in your newsletters? I didn’t change a thing, so thanks for getting the screen cleaned up! Yup, it’s getting steamy these days… thanks for the wonderful pics.

I remember the brutal heat and humidity of that very fun parade. I was always amazed how the locals didn’t seem to sweat nearly as much as I did!

I enjoy reading about San Pedro and want to visit some day. The heat there will be a welcome change from the heat here in the Memphis TN area.
