Big Taste San Pedro: My Best Bite December 2023
I am pleased to announce my Best Bite of December 2023 – the Birria Tacos at Big Taste in downtown San Pedro. The melty browned cheese around the edges, the savory spiced meat, the dipping gravy, the fresh onions and cilantro, the chipotle mayo on the side…divine.
This might be my favorite blog series of all time! Eating delicious food on the island of delicious food and choosing my favorite bite of the month. (And this month, a runner-up at the end)
And asking you guys for recommendations. Comment…message please!
It all started last month: November 2023 Best Bite went to Charmaine’s Coconut Cake.
If you haven’t been to Big Taste Deli, let me tell you about it. It is located between Middle Street and Back Street San Pedro, just around the corner from the Lions Den.
You’ll find a small covered stand with a sign: BIG TASTE.
Step on in and head to the counter – you’ll order there and find a seat. I was actually there to try the Pibil tacos but they wouldn’t be ready for another hour – so I went with a favorite: Birria.
Cochinita pibil is a traditional Yucatec Mayan slow-roasted pork dish. Preparation of traditional cochinita involves marinating the meat in sour orange juice, adding deep red annatto seed and roasting the meat underground while it is wrapped in banana leaf. (Yum) A traditional Belizean special occasion dish.
Birria is from Jalisco, Mexico (Western Mexico) and not a traditional Belize dish. It’s beef, stewed with spices like oregano, chilis, bay leaf and often cinnamon, cloves and all-spice (very Belizean). It’s so good too.
If you have planned correctly – it is Big Taste’s Tacos Tuesday. And you get 5 tacos for the price of the usual 4. (Tacos are served everyday but it’s nice to get an extra)
A mix of fresh (cilantro, onion and lime), super savory, cheesy, crunchy, creamy…they are just soooo good.
The price: $20bzd. You want these tacos.
I’ll be back to try the pibil. To see more information on Big Taste and to check out some of their specials, see their Facebook page.
And now to my runner-up. I might be showing my New Jersey roots here but I embrace them. NJ is the land of great bagels, Italian subs, taylor ham on a Kaiser roll, disco fries and killer pizza. Them good eats.
Runner-Up: A Fantastic Meatball Sub from Brooklyn Bagels
You can watch the Brooklyn Bagel facebook page or attend the Monthly Farmers’ Market at the Truck Stop and order this VERY tasty meatball sub. (Make sure to get to the market early – Linda sells out quick!)
Delicious meatballs stuffed in a bagel-like long bun with lots of sauce, onions and fresh basil. $20bzd. And really really really good. She also makes weekly Wheat Loaves that are great (and CHEAP at $6bzd) and special order lasagne that looks fantastic. Check the Brooklyn Brothers Bagel Facebook page for all the details.

Not been to Belize since the pandemic but will always be the top of my list to return to. Prepandemic forund a hidden gem called Hungry Grouper. Fantastic food, everthing we tried was good went there often. The coconut cream pie was enbelizable. Do you know if they are still there.?
The Hungry Grouper is still there beside the old stadium. They do have great food!
Any particular dish I should try?
Have seen Charmaine’s but not checked it out yet. Thanks for the review – seems I’ll be stopping be soon. If you haven’t, try the cinco leches cake at Corner Sixty next to Maxie’s. They don’t always have it, but when they do – lord it’s good!
GREAT TIP! I LOVE Tres Leches…add two more and I’m in!
I recently ate with some friends at Someplace South who make vegan eating choices. One of them ordered cauliflower tacos. I don’t eat vegan and I don’t really like cauliflower but I tried one of those nuggets and they were freaking fantastic and I will be getting me a full order next time I am there! Might want to check them out.
I LOVE cauliflower…and I love the recommend. I was thinking about heading south this week. Gracias 🙂
