Located in the Belize District
Caye Caulker, Belize (pronounced “Key Cawker”) is called Ambergris Caye‘s little sister but it has a vibe all its own. Smaller in size with sand roads and brightly colored wooden buildings, Caye Caulker gives life to the phrase “Go Slow”.
Here’s a post you might find helpful: Visiting Belize? Deciding Between Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.
Spoiler alert: You can’t really go wrong but they have distinct personalities!
Just 15 minutes flight from Belize City, you can see exactly what you are in from the air. The island was split in two by a hurricane and the north part of the island still remains relatively sparsely populated.
But that is changing veerrry quickly. And the northern side of the island is SUCH a lovely area to visit if you want to really take it slow.
Caye Caulker tends to draw a much smaller, more diverse crowd than the “big island” of Ambergris but is more heavily weighted towards a younger, more international backpacking crew due to its lower prices and it’s laid-back feel.
If both islands appeal to you (as they do to me), there are frequent day trips from Ambergris Caye by catamaran or motorboat and the water taxi (your cheapest option) brings you from San Pedro town to Caye Caulker in just 15 minutes.
PLUS, Caye Caulker will always have a very fond spot in my heart…it’s where I ran into ABC’s “The Bachelor” (goofball Ben Flajnik) which inspired me to write my most popular post of all time as Scooperazzi.
