2014 Placencia Art & Music Festival: THE ART and THE MUSIC!

Yesterday’s afternoon post went in a few different direction:  bus travel…my lodging…Chelsea Handler…but didn’t really get to the main reason that I travelled to Placencia – the Art and Music Sidewalk Festival.   The 11th annual.

There were artists and craftspeople from many parts of Belize…IMG_8870 IMG_8869

IMG_8901 IMG_8874 IMG_8875 IMG_8878The Art Affair Gallery in Placencia (one of my favorite spots) had a booth with both Ernest Garcia’s gorgeous art (see more here and here at the 2013 Expo) and Jeanna’s PRETTY jewelry.  You can see many of her gorgeous pieces in Rubimoon in San Pedro.  Like this…

Jeanna’s work at the fest.

And some of Ernest’s art.

How amazing would this be in a child’s room…or anywhere.  It’s huge and, I think, reasonably priced at $600BZ ($300US).  I love this one.

IMG_8881Unfortunately I have no money for art!  LOVE these lobsters too.  The use of flourescent paint is…amazing.

IMG_8882

And then famous Belizean musician and art Pen Cayetano.  (Check out his amazing website!)  Crazy talent.  I want one!

IMG_8885 IMG_8886I saw some more later that day at a local beach gallery…

IMG_8929I stopped to chat with artist Walter Castillo.  I met him a few years ago at a Kelly McGuire show.  He designed his last album cover.  You can see his work all over Belize.  And he’s starting to do some pieces in lighter, more pastel colors.  Beautiful.

I found this gentleman making palm frond baskets.  Last time I saw him, he was making Belikin holders.

There was a little fair set up on the beach…

Lots of cakes and desserts for sale.IMG_8902Friends from San Pedro, Bob and Maureen and from Placencia, Jolie who worked to organize all of this.

And the gorgeous sea glass and silver jewelry…

I love this stained glass by Leisa at Banana Bank Lodge outside of Belmopan.

IMG_8924 IMG_8925Something about art on the beach makes it even more beautiful…

And for charity…silent auction and a kids’ art tent.  Raise money for the kids of Placencia.

IMG_8971

Love that this village also has a Youth Center.  I need to get information on this and how it started!

IMG_8978

There was a drawing for the BRAND NEW GOLFCART…I had purchased a ticket last year in August at Captain Jak’s.  $100bzd.  300 tickets sold.  $6000bzd donated to the Youth Outlet.

My ticket did NOT win.  The winner was Pam Solomon owner (with her husband) of amazing restaurant Rumfish y Vino.

Random art around town.  A Belikin trash man.

Love this painted on the side of someone’s house.IMG_8922

IMG_8985Okay back to the art for sale.  This mermaid art caught my eye…

IMG_8982 IMG_8984These guys were amazing.  Punta and seagrape wine.

IMG_8988One more beautiful piece of art.

IMG_8990A beautiful weekend.  And I tried hard not to spend money…only buying ONE sea glass necklace.  I will admit that the festival had fewer vendors than I expected but I had a great time.  Maybe because there is another art festival coming up this weekend in Belize City?

belize-street-art-festival (1)Gorgeous weather, gorgeous Placencia, great music, kids having fun, HUGE late night parties and some really good food.  It was great to see artists from all over Belize sharing ideas.

I’m very glad that I went.   Maybe I’ll see you next at the Placencia Lobsterfest?
