Snapshots From my Week: End of August 2023
This week felt like the beginning of the “Rainy Season” on Ambergris Caye. Don’t let the word “rainy” freak you out! While we did have heavy rain some nights and grey skies in the early mornings, it’s also a time for beautiful clouds…rainbows…shifting winds…less sargassum and hot hot sun.
Here are some photos from the week. Starting Monday…which also happened to be my 50th birthday. Jeff made all my favorite foods – Oatmeal pancakes, nigiri, dumplings, a slice of my favorite cake from Annie’s Pastries in San Pedro.
And surprised me with a gorgeous painting first thing in the morning. The artist (you can find her on Facebook) surprised both of us with a tiny painting of our best girl Elsie. And may or may not have brought both of us to tears.
Taking the dogs out later that day. Our “camp dog” Ginger had a small surgery last week and is recuperating at our house. She has spent her entire life at Cayo Frances Farm and Fly on the west side of Ambergris Caye – and it’s her first time seeing the ocean and the reef.
Her initial thoughts: This makes me nervous.
That night we got SOME RAIN! And the next morning some gorgeous clouds. (It was hot and sunny a few hours later). I ran outside to the beach when I saw these beautiful menacing storm clouds.
I love how the ocean glows.
I got inside juuust before the rain.
Wednesday I had a lunch meeting at the gorgeous Mata Chica Resort. (Check out my overnight there – seriously stunning)
Delicious salad…
The views not bad either…
And then to end the week…some photos in town. The ocean is flat and clear…
And the view heading home…over the bridge. A big kayak race – The Love Belize Sea challenge is happening right now. The route for the six-day race spans from Punta Gorda Town, Toledo to Corozal Town, Corozal, covering a total of 218 miles!
You can see the finish line – though the paddlers hadn’t come in yet.
The view about a mile north of the bridge. One of my favorites.
I’ll leave you with a scowling Bombita. The dog that lives on Back a Back Street and is the father of our Mocha’s 12 puppies. The dozen we had in our house for the first few months of the pandemic.
We took his girlfriend, Mocha, we got him neutered and he no longer wants anything to do with us. He actually looks at us with disgust – and changes direction when he sees us coming.
I guess I can’t blame him.
I hope you all have a great weekend and enjoy the last few weeks of summer!

Happy birthday. Great to see you have lived one-third of your life. Can’t wait until my wife and I can return to Belize. Please keep up the wonderful posts.
1/3 Ha! Thank you.
We were there for a couple of weeks. Returned to the states on the 19th. We’ve been going to San Pedro for perhaps 15 years.
So much has changed, ie. there was nothing at secret Beach but the beach!
Certainly there wasn’t a paved or level road beyond Boca bridge.
Palapa was a pretty good walk/ride north of the bridge.
We found the traffic this year to be deplorable, yet for years we’ve had a great desire to become residents of the island.
We have dozens if not hundreds of friends who are 99% locals. The biggest thing for us is not having a person who possesses all the information we need to begin the process. Is there anyone you could refer me to who has A-Z answers to our relocation questions? TIA!
I think Rebecca would be the one. Have you read her book? Between the book and her posts, you’ve pretty much got all the answers
So much has changed is right! I’m not sure there is anyone who has all the answers…it’s lots of two small steps forward, one back…and asking lots of questions. I bet some of the facebook groups with “Ambergris Caye Expats” can help.
Happy birthday Rebecca.
Thanks so much.
Happy Birthday Girl! Bet you don’t feel a day over 30
Great pictures//Thanks
LOL – Bombita takes off when he sees you. Poor guy. Just be glad he’s not a Cape Buffalo (with the giant curly horns). They never forget who cut their balls off either. But if they see that person again they will try to kill them…
I still think he’s plotting something…
That poor baby. Is he homeless? Does he have any owners? If not, why not take him in also? He looks so sad breaks my heart 😞.
We are coming end of January 2024 for our honeymoon and of course look for a property to invest in now for our future retirement. Staying at Shaka Caye for 4 nights then coming to San Pedro.
I still have not decided where we’re going to stay in San Pedro area. But Mata Chica was one of the places on my list.
I would like to know, when the people from Shaka Caye drops us off on the mainland, what’s the best water taxi to take and where would they drop us off? If we need to rent a golf cart, is there a place close to the docks where we would be dropped off?
Thank you for posts! I just recently found you and clearly have a lot more to read!
Rebecca is your BEST resource for anything you need to know about your upcoming trip to SP. She has been helping us find our way for many years. So much happens there in a year’s time! One of her best tips…Isla Bonita Golf Cart Rentals. Make your reservation online and they will meet you at the dock/airport with your cart. rentgolfcartsanpedro.com
Enjoy your stay!
He has a family in the house next door – he hangs out with the guys on the dock all day and then goes home…he’s a happy guy. He just doesn’t like us! Also…we’ve got 3 dogs – and are adopting one more. We are a full house!
Happy Birthday! With love from Nebraska!
Over Covid, my Wife and I read your book and planned our first trip to the island over a year and a half ago. We have been back 3 more times in the interim.
We enjoyed it so much, we’ve recently purchased a Condo at the Grand Baymen. Plan on being back at the end of October. Thank you for ‘painting the picture’ for us and leading us to a place that we love, and eventually will escape from the cold;”Where the sun spends the Winter…on the Beaches of the World!”
That’s so great – thank you so much for letting me know. Hooray!
Happy Birthday Thanks for all the useful information. Do some additional reporting South of the Island.
Right? It is such a drive for me (an hour to get south of town) that I rarely go! Anywhere in particular?
…the place I live in the four plex and casitas.
Nice Scoop!!! How ’bout some pictures of my paradise lost…progress, sucks!! PS. Happy Birthday…see yah come Christmas time.
