March 2024: Daily Events Calendar on Ambergris Caye

This is a list of the many events and activities around the island on Ambergris Caye. I do my best to add events as they are announced.

March is part of the “highest season” (Christmas to April) – and the weather is warm and dry. It can be windy – locals call them “the Easter winds”. I find the best place to see the winds and the weather forecast to be Windfinder.com. But it is the tropics and things can change quite quickly. This is a forecast to look at a few days out – not weeks in advance.

March 6th is our Town Council elections so don’t be surprised if you run into a rally or a parade. TRAFFIC!

March this month means Easter – a holiday that isn’t just a day in Belize – 4 or 5 or 6 day weekend. It’s also a great time to visit Crooked Tree as the dry season really kicks in and the lagoons dry up. THE BIRDS ARE INCREDIBLE. Even if birding is not your thing.

March 1st, Friday

LOBSTER SEASON IS CLOSED! And will reopen July 1st and the San Pedro Lobster Festival.

Drive in Movie Night at Mangata Villas, 6 miles north, 7pm (make reservations) every Friday

March 6, Wednesday

THIS IS ELECTION DAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. THERE ARE TWO VOTING LOCATIONS AND TRAFFIC WILL BE…A SERIOUS SITUATION THIS DAY. By law, no alcohol is to be served until the voting is over. I’m pretty sure they make exceptions for restaurants and resorts but we’ll know more soon.

There will most certainly be a parade at night when the winner is announced.

March 8th, Friday, Baron Bliss Day Observed

Today is a national holiday to honor Belize’s heroes and benefactors and the intriguing character, The Baron Bliss. Banks, schools, the town council will be closed but almost everything else…open. Baron Bliss Day: An Expected Treat!

On the mainland, the largest canoe race in the country takes place over this long weekend. The Belikin La Ruta Maya. It’s incredible (and crazy fun) to watch – there are parties at each of the stops along the way.

Starts at dawn in San Ignacio (look at this crazy video of the start) –> Banana Bank –> Double Head Cabbage –> Burrel Boom –> Belize City (I’ve linked to the ones I’ve seen in person)
