Ambergris Caye, Belize: Let’s Get Started
97% of this blog is about Ambergris Caye because I’ve lived here full time for 12 years. And while I LOVE traveling around Belize – and there are so many – SO RIDICULOUSLY many great places and things to see – I don’t get to do it enough. And that’s fine because there is so much to do on my island.
Ambergris Caye, in the very north of Belize, is the largest and by far the most visited caye (prounounced KEY) in the country. The island is about 25 miles long and separated from Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula by just a thin canal widened by the Maya hundred of years ago.
Wait…take a look at the top 11 things to do on the island. It will get you started and give you the lay of the land on your first trip.
Just a 15-20 minute BEAUTIFUL plane ride from Belize City (and the International Airport) or a 1 1/2 hour boat ride, your transfer to the island after you fly into the country is an easy one.
The beaches are white and sandy, the water countless shades of blue and the reef is just a short boat ride off shore. The town of San Pedro is located towards the south end of the island and even though it is getting busier and busier, it has lots of charm. The main form of transportation is golf carts after all.
Eat at a different restaurant every night…beach bar hop. Live music, a golf cart ride for the day to Secret Beach, go to yoga, dance at a night club…lay by the pool all day or visit a different diving spot every morning.
So much to do from morning until night.
Best of all – well atleast for me – it’s also the island I am proud to call home.
and wait…were you wondering what Ambergris means? It’s basically whale vomit or excrement (the scientists can’t seem to decide which)…that washes up on beaches and then is used in perfumes and fragrances. Duh. You didn’t know that?
